Buen Camino Coastal Club

Flight lands in Porto at 3:15 PM. Allow 30 minutes for immigration and baggage. Take the Autna coach from Porto Campanhã toward Vigo, then taxi the final 25 miles to Baiona. Expect to arrive mid-to-late evening. It's a beautiful evening for a first walk through the old town.

Do Tonight

Pick up pilgrim passports (credencial) at Igrexa de Santa María de Baiona — 0.8 miles from the hotel. Ask for Father Manuel or a nun. Each of the five pilgrims needs their own. Getting it tonight avoids a rushed morning tomorrow. The church is also worth seeing.

Walk the Monterreal Fortress peninsula and the harbor. Find the replica of La Pinta — Baiona is where news of Columbus's voyage first reached Europe in 1493.

Leave Hotel Bahía Bayona heading north toward A Ramallosa, cross the Miñor estuary, and continue to Playa América. Take the coastal/Senda Litoral option — you sleep at Hotel Miramar right beside Playa América so the coastal path makes perfect sense. Arrive early for a beach afternoon.

The most beautiful walking day of the trip. Stay coastal through Panxón, Patos, Saiáns, Canido, O Vao, and Samil Beach before entering Vigo. Starting at Playa América rather than A Ramallosa cuts several km from the standard 21+ km stage. You sleep on the yacht at Real Club Náutico tonight — memorable.

Switch from coastal wandering to following Camino waymarks faithfully. The route climbs out of Vigo along the Camiño da Traída das Augas — the hardest climb of the entire trip — with elevated views across the Ría de Vigo before descending into Redondela. Take the climb slowly. The apartment is right in the center of Redondela, directly on the Camino.

Intentionally short day — 5–6 miles (8–10 km). Follow the Camino toward Cesantes and Arcade. Today's mission is oysters in Arcade, one of the most celebrated Camino lunch stops on the entire Coastal Route.

Rejoin the Camino from Villa Blas, cross the historic Ponte Sampaio bridge over the Verdugo River (site of the 1809 battle against Napoleon), then through the old Roman road (Verea Vella) and 13th-century Chapel of Santa Marta before descending into the magnificent pedestrianized old town of Pontevedra. One of the great cities on the entire Camino.

Stone crosses, eucalyptus woods, vineyards and small Galician villages. This is more about being on the Camino than sightseeing. Splits the long Pontevedra–Caldas de Reis stage into two very manageable days. Lar do Pazo is a rural house in Porráns. Ask the hosts for their favorite nearby dinner spot.

Easy day — 5–6 miles (8–10 km). Caldas de Reis is a historic thermal water town. Finish early, visit the Burgas thermal fountain, soak feet in the natural hot springs along the riverside, and rest for tomorrow's 11.6-mile day to Padrón.

Your longest remaining day at 11.6 miles (18.6 km). By now you have your Camino legs and this is very manageable. Woodlands, rivers, and farmland through Valga into historic Padrón — where the stone boat carrying Saint James is said to have landed in Spain. Host Maria at Gonsa 1 is exceptional and stocks the kitchen. Get the stamp at Iglesia de Santiago — one of the most important on the route.

The penultimate walking day. Follow the Camino through Iria Flavia, A Escravitude, Teo, and toward Milladoiro. Stopping short at SNÖ Pazo de Adrán — an 18th-century Galician manor house with gardens, pool, and a praised restaurant. Distance includes the hotel detour. Santiago is tomorrow.

The final stage. Forest paths open into the city. The spires of the Cathedral rise into view. Walk together all the way into Praza do Obradoiro. Do not go to the hotel first. Walk to the Cathedral together — that is the moment. Afterward: Pilgrim's Office (Compostela certificate), shower, change, and celebrate properly.
